An unnamed (in this book, anyway) young man whose avocation is taping strangers' life stories finds himself interviewing Louis, a 200-year-old vampire from Louisiana. He listens enthralled to Louis' tales of his maker, Lestat, his guilt-plagued life and his love for the child vampire Claudia, tales that carry the listener from colonial Louisiana to the Theatre des Vampires in 19th century Paris, up to the present day.
